Minister’s Message – September 10, 2017

It’s raining! I can’t tell you how happy this is making me. I have all the doors open and am enjoying the goosebumps on my arms. Wet and chilled – what a relief. This morning’s weather feels like a physical manifestation of the apostle Paul’s words to us this Sunday: “…know what time it is…it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep.” (Romans 13:11)

What a great passage for our first fall Sunday back in our building. The somnolence of summer heat is over. The long, unstructured days are running out. I’m hoping also that the days in which we were floundering around trying to get our footing as a newly amalgamated congregation are drawing to a close. Yes, we still have adjustments to make and, the season of seeming bewilderment and feeling overwhelmed with all the changes is shifting into a new time. Eyes wide open, feet on the floor, it’s time to pick up the Commitment Statement we signed on to, and make it happen. We said these things are important to us – time to prove it.This in no way negates the grace offered by God that I spoke about last Sunday; the grace offered when we need a break or fall short of our best intentions. But now we focus on the running relay of being the church in the world; living out our lives of discipleship and passing the baton of active service when we need a break.

This Sunday a number of our people, including 14 children and youth, will be at Camp Fircom on Gambier Island for a congregational time away. We’ll miss them, and we pray that their time together is rich with fun, faith building and deepening solidarity. I’ll see the rest of you at Dunbar Ryerson, 10:00am.

Next Sunday, Sept. 17, is our ‘Kick Off’ Sunday. Come along, and bring your friends for our launch into the fall, and information about all the activities coming up.
