Food and fornication. Those are the two words that jumped out at me as I was reviewing the reading this Sunday. Although our reading is only 3 verses long, it’s going to be a much lengthier process than usual for me to find my way through it, and prepare a sermon that honours the text and how we live in the 21 Century.
Paul is writing to the men of Corinth, and challenging them to live their lives in the fullness of Christian discipleship. Even though, in the grace of Christ all things are permitted, Paul is drawing some boundaries regarding Christian behaviour.
A few chapters later he seems to find a path, writing: “All things are permitted, but not all things are beneficial; all things are permitted, but not all things edify.” (1 Cor. 10:23)
As we worship in this season of Epiphany light we are practicing ‘Going to Ground in God: Nurtured by the Light of Christ’. Going to ground certainly implies being enveloped, fully immersed. What does it mean to be fully immersed in a Christian way of living? How do we balance, can we balance, the busy lives many of us live, with the call to full discipleship? Is it one more thing to add to our calendar, or is there another way to live that doesn’t remove us from the world we are a part of?
Come Sunday morning and hear what Paul and Christ continue to say to the church. I know there is more to it than food and fornication.
Speaking of food, this Sunday we will mark the first anniversary of our becoming a new congregation. There will be cake after worship. What an amazing milestone we have already reached together.
If you have announcements for next Sunday, they need to be in the office by this Tuesdaymorning. Jonathan will be away the remainder of the week.
